Looking after Yourself

Taking care of a child in your home can be a demanding job. No matter what joys or stresses it brings to you and your household, it will certainly change your day-to-day routines and experiences. Children and young people in care should live in a healthy, functional family. You must make sure that you take care of yourself and your family’s needs as well as those of the children placed with you.

If you are worried about how you and your family are coping, talk to your support worker, who can help you identify strategies for managing areas of conflict and any extra support you may need.

The Secretariat of National Aboriginal Islander Child Care (SNAICC) has resources and information available on ways to look after yourself.

Foster Care NT also provides phone support to carers. A Foster Care Support Worker can be contacted on 08 8945 3364 or by visiting their website.
